Joseph and Tammy Merrill have been proactive in keeping Motocross and ATV racing and riding on Long Island for over 20 years. In the past, they promoted American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) sanctioned races at places such as Westhampton Race Track, Bridgehampton Race Circuit, and Suffolk Meadows. They also lobbied for many years to use town, county and state land; however, many issues did not allow the use for a motocross facility. There were no legal places left to ride, and there was a huge concern to all who love the sport of motocross, especially their family and friends. Joseph and Tammy dedicated their time and efforts to create a place where motocross riders could feel safe and enjoy the sport in the natural beauty of Long Island. After purchasing land in Yaphank in 1997, they began their 4 year process to get permits to open their own legal Motocross racing and riding facility. In 2001, they opened the gates of Long Island Motocross.
The facility is family-oriented and is considered a great meeting place for riders, families and friends. Many people from all over come together to participate in dirtbike riding, while having a sense of comfort and security at a legal motocross track. The track is open 5 days a week for non-competitive riding. Long Island Motocross also holds AMA sanctioned races for the competitive riders. Along with running motocross, they also hold many fundraisers for various charities.
